31DC2014: Day 2

Day 2 of the 31 Day Challenge is one of my least favorite days because I just don't like orange. I try and try... But nope.
But on the bright side, this prompt means I get to post the other design I did for PP Blog Fest but chose not to post on that day. Hooray for recycling!

Can you tell what inspired me? ORANGE CHOCOLATE. A true love of mine.
It has come to my attention previously that some of you poor American folk (and likely Europeans also) have not experienced the joy that is a Terry's Chocolate Orange, and I feel truly sorry for you. I would like to personally send you all one, or at least a piece of one.

The orange polish I used is Picture Polish - Totes. It's citrus-y and not pumpkin-y, so this shade is one I find more wearable than others.
The chocolate is Picture Polish - Malt Teaser.

As I said, I was creating this for Blog Fest, so I was experimenting with nail vinyls. That's what I used for the lines creating the orange wedge.
This manicure is still not my favorite but I enjoyed playing with the vinyls!

Now take a walk down memory lane and check out my previous Day 2 designs:

piCture pOlish Blog/Insta Fest 2014!

It's that time of year again... Picture Polish Blog Fest! Big thanks once again to the fine folks at PP for including me in this fun tradition. Last year's blog fest mani was one of my most popular manicures ever, so I was excited to see what would turn out from this year's event.

Things are a little different this time around: We all got one shade to swatch, two shades for nail art, and a special treat... Nail Vinyls!

I got the straight nail vinyls, which come in two sizes on the same sheet. You get a whole bunch in one pack! I was really looking forward to trying these because I am seeing them everywhere and I just hadn't gotten around to buying any. But I think I definitely will now because they are super fun to work with and I can only imagine the things you could create with all the different shapes.
While you're doing your PP shopping, they are now offering a set of four different vinyls on their site here.

So without further ado, let's start this Blog Fest 2014!
My swatch shade is one of the newest polishes, and it is tooootally gorgeous. Ready to see it?

piCture pOlish - Grace
Isn't this the prettiest princess polish ever? The subtle holo combined with the sparkly pink base is just so sweet and cute.  I did three coats for full coverage. This is a re-release of the old Ozotic shade 607.

And now for the nail art!

My two shades are piCture pOlish - Totes, a summery creamsicle orange, and piCture pOlish - Malt Teaser, essentially liquid chocolate in nail polish form. I paired it with a white base and did some stripes! I think it looks pretty cute and retro, n'est-ce pas?

This wasn't my first (or second) attempt to do something with these colors. Let's face it, orange and brown are pretty much my least favorite colors to use, and we couldn't mix other nail techniques besides the vinyls,  so this was super difficult for me. I envy those of you with the pinks and purples and chevron vinyls... Haha! But I'm glad I managed to pull something together. And in fact, I even got two compliments on it at work today!

Creating this striped look is really easy with the vinyls. Once your base color is dry, you lay down the vinyls in whatever areas you do NOT want to be painted with your next color(s). Once they are smoothly applied to the nail to avoid any polish seeping under, you add your other colors to fill in the spaces. If you're working in a large area you can just use your polish brush, but I opted to apply the colors with a dotting tool to precisely get the polish between the small stripes. Work one nail at a time, and remove your tape as quickly as possible to get the most crisp lines. It's totes simple!

Couldn't resist.

I hope you guys enjoyed my contribution to this year's blog fest!

piCture pOlish Collab-Fest 2013

Hello everyone and happy Monday! (Even though it is only 1:00 am for me right now...)
Today is piCture pOlish Collab Fest! A day for all of us lucky ladies who had collaboration shades released this year to post them all again for your viewing pleasure. I was going to schedule this post for the afternoon but decided to just go ahead and post it now!

Unfortunately for me, this came at a really awful time for my nails. I am in the middle of final exams, I'm doing more hours at work for the holidays, plus Christmas preparations around my house, PLUS spending the rest of my time doing holiday nails for my friends and family... My nails and hands have taken a serious beating. Worst nails ever!
I had an awful break last week and I tried to hide it by rounding my nails off but I just don't like that look.
So you're getting no new close-ups from me today! But I did manage to take some festive photos and I will include an older one just to show off my purdy polish.

Wouldn't you like to find this under your tree?

Of course I never get sick of seeing my beauty! Siren Song is my pride and joy. It fills me with excitement every time someone posts a picture of them wearing it. I'm ecstatic when my friends buy it, and even some of my friend's moms have bought it! I couldn't be happier about this whole experience and I truly do love wearing my polish.
It's one of those shades I could wear again and again and I am really delighted about that.

I love when people ask me what polish I am wearing and I get to tell them that it is mine!
At first I was always carrying one around to show off. HA!

You can find Siren Song at picturepolish.com.au or from many of their international stockists.
Be sure to follow PP on Facebook and Instagram because they post lots of great manis!

My pals at Nail Polish Canada are still offering free shipping on any order within Canada! Check that out, Canadian chums.

Have you picked up a bottle of Siren Song? Share photos with me!

piCture pOlish - Super Styling (+leggings!)

Hey guys! Time to post swatches of the beautiful polish that came with my beautiful leggings.

piCture pOlish, thank you for being geniuses and creating these leggings.
If you follow me on Instagram (or saw my October haul) you'd already know how in love I am with them.
Best piece of clothing to ever grace my body with its presence.
But what makes them even better? They come with a gorgeous polish!

piCture pOlish - Super Styling
This is seriously my new favorite PP (besides mine of course.) Good loooooooord I love it!!
I actually wore it twice in a row. I took it off to put on a new color and then I put it back on. Yes.

This color was inspired by Fashion Polish and I gotta say, PP girls, if you wanna do a purple like this inspired by me to release with more leggings, I will be the first on the pre-order list! HA!

So delightful. I wanna put it on again right now!

You can get Super Sytling on its own from www.picturepolish.com.au or through other international stockists. But of course I think you should get them with the leggings. Totally worth it.

Time to go take some more artsy Instagram photos of myself wearing them... Hehe!

31DC2013 - day 6

Yoooooooo, sup. Today is Purple day and purple is my fave.
I decided to use one of my untried purple polishes, a beauty from one of my fave brands, piCture pOlish!

piCture pOlish - Warning
Hot damn, this is a good one. Shimmery purpley bluey goodness. Really happy with it! It needs three coats to cover completely but I don't even mind.

I didn't just wanna leave this solid today so I added some glitter and stickers!

Hello Kitty!!! The nail stickers were from Born Pretty. And the glitter is Maybelline - Lavender Sparks.

This mani was a little hard to photograph but I didn't have much time because my camera battery was about to die... Haha!

Ain't nothin' better than purple glittery HK nails. Am I right?

31DC2013 - day 2

31 Day Challenge Day 2 let's go!
Today's theme is Orange.

If you know me, you know I really don't like orange. At all. Never.
I try to wear it and like it but every time I do I just cannot get into it.

How do you make orange likeable? You add pizza...

I'm actually loving this mani. Pizza nails!!!
It's not the most precise, but lets just say that's the gooey melty cheese? Yeah.

My friends and I have eaten a lot of Pizza Hut buffet this summer, so it is an extremely fitting manicure for me. If only I was wearing it while I was at the buffet on Sunday. HA.

The base color here is piCture pOlish - Citrus.

This mani is based around an image from the Cheeky plate CH-41. I tried stamping it in beige, I tried stamping it in yellow, but nothing worked. So I ended up stamping it in white and filling in the colors of the pizza. It didn't take long though because I was able to be semi-messy without it showing too much. I mixed some custom colors for the pizza colors and don't really remember what I used.

I'm really happy with the results!

I am so pleased that I was able to do a mani I actually like for orange day!
Anyone else addicted to pizza buffet? I'm hungry...

piCture pOlish blog fest 2013! the year of the blogger!

Hello everyone and Happy Blogfest! That's right - I am once again participating in piCture pOlish's annual Blog Fest celebration.
This year's theme is the Year of the Blogger. "This year it’s all about you and celebrating what you do!"
And what's even more interesting is this year, we all have to create a wonderful nail art manicure using three shades sent to us by the very generous girls ar piCture pOlish. There is going to be an overwhelming amount of amazing manis today guys!
Being that I am in Newfoundland, North America's most easterly point, my post will be one of the first from this continent! Woo! (Everyone is posting at 7pm local time.)
I'm sure you all have seen the fantastic blogger collaboration polishes that PP has been releasing... And the three winners this year will get to create their own shades!
The voting will happen on the special Blog Fest Pinterest board
here.

Without further ado... Here's my manicure.

The colors chosen for me were Marine, Mad Magenta, and Citrus. I was so happy to get three great creme shades!

piCture pOlish - Marine
This is a beautiful teal creme polish with a great formula. 2 coats, no issues. And no staining! I've worn this like three times since receiving it a few weeks ago... Haha!
piCture pOlish - Mad Magenta
This is a shade I always wanted from PP so I was so happy to find it in my package! Again, two easy coats. This has been on my toes ever since the day I got it! Great toe color.

piCture pOlish - Citrus
This is my least favorite of the three, just because it is orange. Not an orange fan. But it works for me in nail art with other colors! Just as with the other two, two coats, no issues.
So... What kind of art did I do? I'll give you one guess...

Leopard print!!!
I struggled for a long time with whether or not I wanted to do leopard print. I've done it a lot and I know a lot of people would be going all-out with intense, new designs. But in the end I decided hey, it is so me, I should just go for it!

Another part of this year's Blog Fest is that we also have to do tutorials! So here's how I created this manicure.

First of all, you're gonna need a small dotting tool, your clean-up brush (and polish remover) and a makeup sponge. (Don't forget that you can use the same sponge over and over by cutting off the used parts! The one I've used here looks like it has helped me in many manis! Haha!)

The first thing you need to do is the gradient. I like to use two techniques together to create the most flawless gradient.
First, apply your base color (Citrus) and allow it to dry almost completely.
Next, blob some Mad Magenta onto your work surface (scrap paper, wax paper, stamping plate, whatever). Using a small edge of the sponge, begin to build the color onto the tip and fading down into the nail. For a more detailed tutorial of this technique, check out this post I did ages and ages ago when I was still a newbie! (Even though the pictures aren't up to my current standard, the post still has lots of great tips.)

To blend the gradient even more and perfect the fade, I use the second gradient technique. There is a great tutorial for this by The Nailasaurus.
Basically, you paint lines of the two colors on your work surface, swirl it a little in the middle, and then dip the sponge in/around it to pick up the two colors and the blended part in the middle.
You sponge this onto your entire nail all at once, dabbing several times to continue to blend the colors.
You'll need to do this a couple times to get enough polish in the sponge to be able to do all your nails.

The reason I like to do both techniques at once is because I find the first technique doesn't create the smoothest gradient, and the second one on its own requires too many coats to build the second color if you don't already have some on the nail. So do both. Got it?

Get yo' clean up on, girrrrrrl. The sponging techniques can leave a big mess. Use your clean up brush (and optionally some Q-tips first) to get all the polish off of your skin.

Once you're all clean, add the first step of your leopard print with Marine. I just do those blobs irregularly with the brush from the polish itself. It does not need to be perfect or neat at all! All leopards are different, right?

Then you have to add the black detail with a black polish and your small dotting tool. Again, don't stress about being neat and perfect. Just make random shapes like C shapes and O shapes and dots and lines and whatever you think looks right.
You can do it big, small, on your full nail, just in some areas - however you feel!

You add topcoat and tada! You're done! Aren't they pretty?
I'm happy I decided to go with the leopard print because I just love the way it looks. I think I'll wear this manicure for a week at least.

Thank you so much to the girls at piCture pOlish for letting me participate in this great tradition once again! And happy Blog Fest to all!

my little minions

A few weeks ago, my friend and I decided to go see Despicable Me 2. And obviously I had to do some minion nails for the occasion.

Everyone and their mother has done these nails by now... But they are always ridiculously cute. (Despicably cute?)

I chose to do a one-eyed minion and a two-eyed minion.

It may seem like a difficult design for less experienced nail artists, but they are surprisingly easy to do if you just break it down into shapes!
You start with a yellow base, and add a blue french tip. Small blue lines and black dots complete the overalls. Make a black line for the goggle-strap, and a silver circle with a smaller white circle inside it and a black dot inside that for the eye. Go crazy with the mouth!

And remember, every minion is different and also a little crazy - so they don't have to be perfect!

I used all Color Club polishes for the minions:
Color Club - Almost Famous (yellow)
Color Club - Bright Night (blue)
Color Club - Where's The Soiree? (black)
Color Club - White Tip (white...duh)
Color Club - Wild Orchid (silver)
Color Club - Blushing Rose (pink)

The color on my other nails is piCture pOlish - Marine.

Have you guys ever done minion nails? Let me see your minions!

I have to say though, I didn't think the second movie was as funny as the first. Oh well!

I'll leave you with my favorite quote from the first movie:
