Super Bass = Super Fail

Hey everyone! Today I'm going to show you something I probably wouldn't normally show - a random NOTD (nail-of-the-day) that I did last week when I was in a hurry. It's not impressive or particularly appealing in photos but then I tried to add something which just did not work. And for that reason, you need to see this.

This is one coat of China Glaze - 2030 and one coat of OPI - Bring On The Bling.
Just a simple, quick gold mani that looks nice in person but sort of gritty in these photos.
I like it because it matches these OPI cosmetic bags I have:

Cute, right?
So I wore this mani just for a day and when I was ready for something new I decided to add the latest shatter that OPI has come out with, OPI - Super Bass Shatter from the Nicki Minaj collection.
And it just did not work. I'm pretty baffled.

It cracked a bit on my index and middle finger but then it just stopped doing anything.
Nothing. Just a coat of pinky red polish. Nadda.
So weird right?

Most pictures I've seen of Super Bass look awesome! I thought it was going to crack really well! But then this happened.
I need to try it again because I really like the color.

Do you have Super Bass? Does it work? I'm curious!
I'm going to be singing that song for the rest of the day.
Boom boom boom boom....

  1. I have it and it actually worked surprisingly well for me! (I'll post a pic later)...Weird that it didn't really crack for you! Boo! :(

  2. I have it and it worked really well! I posted pictures on my blog if you are interested in looking at how it did for me. It's actually one of my preferred Shatter colors because of the way it cracked and became opaque as the smaller bits formed.

Which top coat did you use on your original mani?

  3. ALL of my OPI shatters have been like that! They just don't work! I gave them away because I thought I was doing something wrong.. maybe some bottles are just duds? Super bummer, though. (See what I did there?!)

  4. I always thought shatters needed a sticky base? (semi wet) to crackle?

    That might be your issue?

  5. That sucks! Have you concidered trying a different base?

  6. Have you got a top coat over the glitter? If not, that might be the problem. Crackles do care what kind of polish they're applied onto. :)

  7. The OPI Shatters NEVER worked for me. Not the black, not the silver, not the red... I thought they just hated me.

  8. I've noticed, that crackles don't like glitters. You have to even out the coat of glitter with topcoat so it is as smooth as creme polish. I had the same experience when I'd used black China Glaze crackle over Mistletoe Kisses - it looked like swamp.

  9. You could add about 2 drops of nail polish thinner and try again. I've had to do that for a couple of my crackles, and they ended up cracking better.

  10. thanks for the tips guys! i did have Seche Vite over the glitter so it was smooth, that shouldn't be the problem.
and i don't think it needs thinner because it is really thin already!

i think the problem was nails come in contact with polish removers and stuff at work and the very top layer of topcoat was removed or damaged. so the shatter probably didn't like that!

and summersun, OPI Shatter is supposed to be over dry polish but croco-crackle type polishes are supposed to be over slightly wet polish.

  11. Another thing to try is to make sure that you shake the bottle well if you haven't already. I had that problem with my Sephora by OPI crackle, it didn't work and came on way too thick until I shook it up good for a minute. I hope it works out for you though, it's such a pretty color!

  12. I have it. Super Bass is one of my favorite shatters. I don't know if I just apply them wrong, but all the others I've used get super goopy mid-application. This one did not and it cracked just fine. :/ Plus it is an AMAZING color!

  13. Yes, like someone said before, I would use a topcoat before because glitters have the tendency to absorb the nail polishes (I always have to put on 2 or 3 layers of topcoat to make them smooth). And by the way, try Super Bass on your bare nails, does it crack?

  14. The silver shatter from OPI only worked once on me. Afterwards, it seemed to stop working. I'm not sure what's the problem. Maybe it needs a smoother surface (more topcoat) or maybe natural oils on the nail could prevent it from working? Hope you figure out the problem!

  15. I have super bass and it works awesome! however, i've always had trouble with shatters over glitter...

  16. I am amazed at how many people have said they have had issue with shatters! I def have had issues putting them over glitters, I just don't think they are smooth enough. I think if anyoneis having issues over creme they are applyingi t wrong. You can't brush over it many times. I always make sure I never make one stroke overlap another and mine ALWAYS cracks :) (Less on glitter tho :))

  17. I am anti shatter/crackles now - but there are still a very few in the metallic ones I like. Bass is a shade I really like and like the look too - when it works that is. Sorry yours was a bust.

  18. I think you should contact OPI and show them your pictures! It should work, maybe you have a bad bottle!

  19. wow this is so strange!! try it over different combos an see if it still doesn't work

  20. I have had problems using the white shatter over Seche before, maybe because its so smooth? My super bass works fine, maybe next time quickly run a buffing file over the top coat.

  21. I've had similar problems with other opi shatters, namely the bright blue one. What I found through trial and error was that they seem to work BEST using a opi top coat - don't know why, but since I tried it that way I always get at least okayish shatter.

  22. I got super base to shatter fine, but my base polish wasn't completely dry when I used it. I applied topcoat over my polish, let it dry about 5 minutes and then applied shatter.

  23. Mine works great- I applied it over polish that was about ten mins dry and it shattered a dream. Quite a few people on PAA have been saying that theirs doesn't work though, so potentially there's a dud batch lurking somewhere....

  24. Try putting a fresh coat of Seche Vite on before the shatter. That's what i did when using la rosa crackle over extra-va-vaganza

  25. Even though OPI shatters are supposed to be applied over completely dry polish, I have found that on my nails the shatter works better when my base color is still tacky. And I noticed that the amount that you need to apply varies between shatters as well. Some require a super thin coat, some need a thick coat. I've found that Super Bass needs a fairly thin coat.

  26. Did you shake it like a polaroid picture? lol...I did my super bass over both save me and silver shatter, with no top coat underneath and they worked fine. Maybe it's a bad bottle? OPI seems to have poor quality control recently...
